I find three books that tackle Bible difficulties stand out above all others. Gleason Archer's "Encyclopedia of Bible Difficulties", Norman Geisler's and Ron Brooks' "When Skeptics Ask...", and this one. Out of those three this is probably my favorite. This one seems to go into deeper historical setting information. And as one who questions constantly, I am finding better answers here. That is not to say that the three books disagree, for they do agree with each other. This one seems to always anticipate the extra question someone would ask. And now to alienate at least 50% of you...

Book Description
The Christian church has a long tradition of systematic theology, that is, studying theology and doctrine organized around fairly standard categories such as the Word of God, redemption, and Jesus Christ. This introduction to systematic theology has several distinctive features: - A strong emphasis on the scriptural basis for each doctrine and teaching - Clear writing, with technical terms kept to a minimum - A contemporary approach, treating subjects of special interest to the church today - A friendly tone, appealing to the emotions and the spirit as well as the intellect - Frequent application to life - Resources for worship with each chapter - Bibliographies with each chapter that cross-reference subjects to a wide range of other systematic theologies.
![]() | The Message of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7 : Christian Counter-Culture)Author: John R. W. StottBinding: Paperback List price: $16.00 USD Amazon price: $10.88 USD |
Book Description
"The followers of Jesus are to different," writes John Stott, "different from both the nominal church and the secular world, different from both the religious and the irreligious. The Sermon on the Mount is the most complete delineation anywhere in the New Testament of the Christian counter-culture. Here is a Christian value-system, ethical standard, religious devotion, attitude to money, ambition, lifestyle and network of relationships--all of which are totally at variance with those in the non-Christian world. And this Christian counter-culture is the life of the kingdom of God, a fully human life indeed but lived out under the divine rule."

The New Bible Dictionary is more like an encyclopaedia than simply a dictionary. The scholarship is first-rate and the book is an almost essential resource for those who are conducting more in-depth study of the Bible.
It contains a number of articles from a range of good Christian scholars on pretty much every person, place, book and other thing in the Bible. For example, when discussing a book of the Bible, the article would contain information about the author, the date of writing, some of the scholarly issues concerning that book and would give a broad overview of the purpose and theology of the book.
![]() | Hard Questions, Real AnswersAuthor: William Lane CraigBinding: Paperback List price: $15.99 USD Amazon price: $10.87 USD |
With 2 Ph.D.'s in his hip pocket and many scholarly writings to his name, William Lane Craig could go through life as a pompous ivory tower dweller. Instead, Craig has made himself available to the common man. From the information he provided Strobel in his layperson works to works like Hard Questions, Craig is understandable for any Christian willing to hear. This is a simple, 8-chapter book that hits issues like doubt, unanswerer prayer, and suffering and evil that would be a benefit to anyone struggling with these issues. The book is not meant to be comprehensive, and certainly with only 8 topics, there is much left out of the book.

From Library Journal
During its 40-year history, this work has established a reputation as a leading single-volume Bible commentary representing the evangelical perspective. However, the last edition was published nearly a quarter-century ago. Around 75 percent of the current edition is completely new, and the rest is thoroughly revised. Not only are the contents fresh, but so are most of the contributors, who represent some of the best-known evangelical scholars of the current generation. The commentaries emphasize the final form of the texts rather than the sources that may underlie them. Matters such as authorship, date, and sources are dealt with at the beginning of each commentary. Additionally, information on biblical history and the different literary genres (with the peculiar exception of prophecy) is presented in the introductory articles throughout the volume. This revised edition should be on library shelves alongside Harper's Bible Commentary and The New Jerome Biblical Commentary as a conservative complement to them. Recommended for public and academic libraries.
